Experiences and exemples of exploratory walks 

Exploratory walks are relatively light, cheap and even fun way to analyse urban localities. The practical nature of the process gives it a realism that local people tend to find more appealing than a meeting room, and participants seem to move naturally from problems to responses. Walkabouts have been used very effectively as part of women’s safety audits and, more generally, to assess safety issues in the neighbourhoods in a democratic and participative manner. A recent study by the Home Office in the United Kingdom, establishes the pertinence of community policing to increase public confidence in the police.

The study looks at elements in the existing scientific literature and local practices and classifies the interventions in three categories: what works, what looks promising and the potentials obstacles.

Local democracy and good governance were the core issues of the lunch debate to which the EFUS Executive Committee had invited Mr Alfonso Zardi, the Head of the Council's department in charge of these issues. In the longstanding tradition of exchange and cooperation with the Council of Europe, this lunch debate allowed to get to know the organisations work and priorities in this field on theintergouvernmental side.

The interdepartmental conference on Drugs supports a common and integrated approach on drugs issue in Belgium and adopts a joint declaration. This document concerns illicit drugs but also tobacco, alcohol and psychoactive medicaments and reminds that drugs consumption is a health issue links to other sectors (welfare, social inclusion, security, economy,…) as well as the importance of harms reduction and practical knowledge.
